What Hair Loss Research has Found

Thinning and balding air is a problem for many people. They are always looking for new answers to solve the problem of losing their hair. And scientists are always researching. They try to find out as much as they can about different diseases, from their origin to correlation to other diseases. This is the way they find new treatments and cures. There have been a lot of new developments in hair loss research.

One study has shown there may be a correlation between stem cells and hair loss treatments. They have found that there are stem cells in the bulge of the hair follicle. They extracted the stem cell from the hair follicle and placed it in adult mice. Within a few weeks there were already forming new hair follicles. This is important to hair loss because this means that by transplanting these stem cells your body will be able to create new hair follicles, which means new hair. Hair that is not subject to balding. When your hair follicles die, new hair can never grow there, which is why being able to create new ones is an exciting discovery.

The most recent study has shown that scientists have now discovered a gene, called APCDD1.  This gene controls hair loss and growth. It is the gene that causes hereditary hypotrichosis simplex, a hair loss condition that is very similar to male pattern baldness. Identifying this gene has allowed them to find more data on the pathways that control the growth process of hair, called the Wnt pathways. The gene interrupts the signal of these pathways, as it does in male pattern baldness. They have discovered how to manipulate the pathway without using hormonal drugs, like the ones that are on the market. This is beneficial to the people who cannot take hormone changing drugs for whatever the reason but still want a way to treat their hair loss.

Another study showed that it might even be possible to clone hair follicles. Once they were cloned they could be injected right into the scalp of the person they were cloned from. This means that a person could have hair as thick as they wanted, since it would only be a matter of cloning. This is also nice because it would mean you would not need to take medications or have painful surgeries done to treat hair loss. It would be sort of like getting Botox injections all over your balding areas.

Hair loss research is imperative to finding new treatments and ultimately a cure to hair loss. Even though these amazing discoveries have been made, they are still years from becoming products and procedures available to the public. But this should give hope to the many people who are suffering from hair loss. All they have to do is be patient, it is only a matter of time. Science is working on getting them the best possible hair loss treatments through cloning, stem cells and even manipulating the pathways of hairs.
