The Ringing in the Ear - Will it Ever Stop and How Can I Stop it?

That ringing, pulsing or swishing you are hearing is a condition known as Tinnitus. This sound you hear is not a disease but a symptom that originates from an underlying problem. In most cases tinnitus is not serious but more like a nuisance that will resolve itself. However, over 30 million Americans suffer with this condition. In this disorder only you can hear the noise. Some of the sounds or noises you may hear are:

• Ringing
• Buzzing
• Humming
• Pulsing
• Clicking
• Hissing
• Roaring
• Whistling

The noises you hear may vary in pitch from high to low squeal and may be in only ear or both. For some the noises may be so loud that it becomes extremely distracting and interferes with your ability to concentrate on your work. The ringing in ear may also be a condition that is continual or one that is intermittent.

What are the causes of this ringing in ear? Here are just a few of the possible causes:

1. Exposure to loud noises - some possible loud noise causes are firearms, chainsaws, musical devices like iPods and MP3 players or attending a loud concert.

2. Earwax - when too much earwax accumulates in the ear canal which also traps dirt gets too hard and becomes difficult to just wash away.

3. The elderly - the most common age of hearing loss is at age 60. When tinnitus is caused by aged hearing loss it is known as presbycusis.

4. Medications - some medications or infections to the inner ear like Meniere's syndrome can also cause tinnitus.

The fact that the ringing in ear is actually a symptom of another underlying problem the treatment of tinnitus will depend on what your doctor finds the problem to be. For example, if the ringing in ear is due to accumulation of earwax then a flushing of the ear would be appropriate and thus the symptom would soon dissipate.

However, if the condition for tinnitus is caused by a bigger health problem then treatment for the ringing in ear will depend on solving that particular health condition. Most believe that tinnitus is a symptom that will go away on its own. But there are now alternative treatments that are available and are highly successful.
