For optimum effect, it is used in combination with diet and exercise. The general dosage pattern of this drug may be alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications. Actos belongs to a group of drugs known as thiazolidinedione antidiabetic. Its mechanism of action includes lowering of blood sugar levels in the body by making body cells highly sensitive to the action of insulin. However, there is an important precaution to be kept in mind before using Actos. Thiazolidinedione antidiabetics like Actos could result in or worsen heart failure in certain patients. If you have a history of heart failure your doctor must be informed. Actos is not used in the treatment of patients with mild to serious heart failure. Both when you start on Actos and when the dose is increased you will be checked for signs of heart failure. If you notice shortness of breath; swelling of the ankles, hands or feet; or sudden unexplained weight gain, consult your doctor immediately. You physician may change your dose or stop medication. While all medicines could have side effects, many people suffer no or only minor side effects. If you experience any of these most common side effects, check with your doctor immediately: muscle aches; headache; weight gain or sore throat. Medical assistance must be sought immediately if you experience any of the serious side effects such as: severe allergic reactions (hives; difficulty breathing; itching; tightness in the chest; rash; swelling of the face, mouth, tongue or lips); symptoms of heart failure (eg, sudden unexplained weight gain; shortness of breath; swelling of the ankles, hands or feet); blurred vision or other vision changes; symptoms of liver problems (eg., stomach pain; dark urine; unexplained nausea, loss of appetite or vomiting; yellowing of the skin or eyes; sweating); unusual bone pain etc. |
