Flomax

Flomax is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is also known as tamsulosin hydrochloride and is available in the form of capsules of 0.4 mg and 0.8mg. Besides tamsulosin hydrochloride, it also contains inactive components like methacrylic acid copolymer dispersion, microcrystalline cellulose, triacetin, calcium stearate, titanium dioxide; ferric oxide, gelatin, and trace amounts of black edible ink.

Dosage and administration of Flomax

Flomax is prescribed to be taken once a day after the meal around same time every day. During the initial dosages, 0.4mg capsule is advised. If the body fails to respond to the medicine in 2-4 weeks the doctor may ask you to increase the strength of the drug to 0.8mg. If for some reason the medication is stopped and is required to start again, is to be started with 0.4mg capsules taken once a day again.

What are the side effects of Flomax?

Back pain, blurred vision, cough, decreased sexual ability, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, sinus, sleep apnea and weakness are some of the side effects that have found to be linked with the usage of Flomax. There are other severe side effects that may require them to be brought to the attention of your doctor immediately. Allergic reactions, itching, falling short of breath, swelling in mouth, fever, chest pain, and shivering, irregular heartbeat and in men an erection that may last longer than usually and painful erection are some of the other symptoms. Flomax may also induce seizures and other nervous system disorders. It may also cause abnormal ejaculation in men. Besides the symptoms listed above it is also known to cause some disorders that can be linked to respiratory, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and ocular body systems.

Precautions that need to be taken

Flomax capsule need to be swallowed and shut not be crushed or chewed. BPH has been found to exist with prostate cancer ; hence the patient should be diagnosed for both the diseases before starting treatment with Flomax. Flomax is also known to impair the reaction rate of body and causes impaired thinking. Hence make sure you do not drive or involve yourself in something that requires you to be attentive and alert. It may also make you feel dizzy if you get up from a sitting or lying position and you may even fall. Make sure that you stay down for some time and if you need to get up, get up slowly and steadily. Alcohol is known to aggravate the side effects like dizziness and drowsiness as a result of Flomax. Make sure you avoid drinking when you have been adminstered to use Flomax. Make sure you do not overdose as that may further aggravate all the symptoms that the drug is known to cause. In the event of abnormal or reactive response by usage of Flomax is found, consult your doctor immediately.
