Be carefull before you report

Nowadays people make report about anything from any person, or even from a child. Some people just want keep themselves busy chatting .So they fill their spare time by reporting anything they hear. Islam does not want us to just uttering words which we hear like parrots. Because each and every word we utter is recorded by the angels that Allah has appointed to record our deeds and on the Day of Judgment we will be accountable to Allah (SWT) for all his deeds and utterances. Allah says what means

Not a word does he (or she) utter but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it) Quran (50:18 )

We should as Muslims take care of the credibility of any word we report. If you look at our pious predecessors who reported the Hadeeth, you will find that they set very strict criteria for the collection of hadeeth thus making sure about the reliability of the one from whom the hadeeth is collected. Since as Muslims, we believe that man is accountable for his sayings and actions, we should be very careful to verify the authenticity of what we hear before reporting it. In this regard, Allah says what means:

O you who believe! If a fasiq (liar evil person) comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done (Quran 49:6)

After making sure that the person is reliable and trustworthy, one can move to the next step of verification. That is to decide whether it is useful to report or not. Some news can create fear or a threat to security, therefore, it will be advisable to refer these matters to the appropriate authority that will investigate and take the necessary action to correct the situation. In connection with this Allah (SWT) says what means:

When there comes to them some matter touching (public) safety or, they make it; known (among the people); if only they had referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have understood it from them (directly). Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allah upon you, you would have followed Shaitan (Satan), save a few of you.

(Quran 4:83).

When you report news from books or the media you should make reference to the relevant source or sources of your information. One should only writes or reports what is authentic from the media, because it is not everything you watch, read or hear that is true. Also Allah (SWT) has warned us in the Quran that we should not just believe and follow everything we hear and see without making sure of the truthfulness of the news. Allah (SWT) says what means:

And if you obey most of those on the earth, they will mislead you far away from Allah’s path. They follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but lie. (Quran 6:116).

If you report something from reference you should indicate it. So that people can know who say this or that.

In conclusion, I would like to mention that the believer should be responsible in his reporting. He should know what type news to report, from whom to get information and for what purpose. So news that could cause Fitnah (trouble) and spread corruption, or result in fear and insecurity must be avoided.  Islam encourages Muslims to speak the truth always. Allah says what means:

O you who believe! Keep you duty to Allah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth. (Quran33:70)

Finally, I advice people to keep away from useless argument as this action bring no benefit to both parties except harm. It is could be a food for thought to ask: why did Allah create each person with one tongue and two ears?
