Age Limitations For A Public Servant

Age limitations for Public servants?

Dalip Singh Wasan, Advocate.

As far as India is concerned, there is no age limitations for the politicians and they can continue in office till they want because the state is responsible for keeping them alive by providing them with medical facilities meeting the expenditure from the public exchequer.  If we go deep. we can find some of the politicians who are in the line and take part in elections only to win so that they could get proper treatment while in office, which they would not be in a position to afford if they are out of the line.  If we want that the state may disclose expenses made on the medical treatment of our politicians, the figures shall give us a big shake.

Actually when we were framing the constitution, the pen was in the hands of the politicians and they were trying to give maximum benefits to their brother politicians and that is the reason, they did not prescribe, qualifications, training, courses, experience, age and health limitations and they allowed that maximum of people should be engaged in this line and they are at liberty to take up this line as a profession, trade, calling and employment.  They had been investing big moneys and they had been collecting big profits through scams, scandals, muddles, bribes, corruption or the like and none could stop them from these indulgences.  The result is before us.

When we are very cautious while prescribing age limitations for government servants, we should have also prescribed these limitations for public servants especially for those who are elected to work in our August Houses.  Old people should not be allowed to continue till death, because they are burden on the state exchequer. Therefore, time has come when the people of India must see that only young and healthy people should be elected and old and ill or diseased people should be avoided.  Government shall not prescribe health qualifications for them because if they do like this then most of them shall be given the kick from the houses.

We must be alive and we must see that no one who has completed 70 years age must be allowed to sit in the house/houses because there are old saying that such and such person has crossed sixty years of age and people avoid to meet a man who has completed seventy years of age because if they meet him, he shall be wasting much time without any useful talk.  The Britishers had fixed this age limitation of 55 years for the government servants and there was a cause and they had correctly prescribed this age limitation.  If a government servant should retire at the age of 55 or 58, why these politicians, who too are public servants should be allowed beyond these age limitations.  We may give them service till they complete 70 years and no beyond that age.  The public may take up this question in the public and they must give their opinions on the subject and if need be they must call for the record of medical treatment of elected people and the total expenses made update.  They shall be surprised to note that a big part of our budget had been consumed by these people on this futile exercise.

Age limitation is one of the correcting measure.
