Consumer Product & Safety Commission Recalls Play Yards

One of these hazards is the possibility of the play yard sides collapsing. Kolcraft has already received almost 350 reports (and counting) or collapsing play yard sides. At least 21 of these reports have already involved injuries to small children. Thankfully, the injuries that have been reported thus far have all been minimal.

This recall comes after a number of children’s products have already been recalled this year, including baby floats, cribs, and car seats, just to name a few. The play sides, like many of the other recalled products, were manufactured primarily in China, but also had a manufacturing base in both Spain and Italy as well. Kolcraft manufactures the play yards, but they unfortunately do not manufacture the defective products for their company alone. Kolcraft produces the play yards for other children’s product manufacturers, including Eric Carle, Contours, Carter’s, Sesame Street, Care Bear, and Jeep. Virtually all of these companies sell their products, including the defective play yards, online and at local retailers across the country, like K-mart, Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, and Babies R Us.

The time period in which the defective play yards were sold ranges from January 2007 to January 2009. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has told retailers to stop selling the defective products and encouraged consumers to cease from using the play yards entirely. This is not, however, the first time that Kolcraft play yards have been recalled due to faulty manufacturing. Another recall took place in September 2007 when a 10-month old baby died of strangulation on a Kolcraft play yard changing table. Apparently the changing table posed a strangulation hazard because of the restraint strap. There were at least 12 different types of play yards included in the most recent recall, many of which came equipped with changing tables. For information regarding a refund for the defective play yard, you can contact Kolcraft Enterprises.
