The Effect of Karnat Dynasty on maithil matrimonial traditions

The rulers ofmithilawho established Karnat dynasty originally belonged to Karnataka. They came through Bengal to Mithila. The rise of Karnats in Mithila also brought the cultural elements of South India. One may see the their effect on the contemporary art and literature.

The writings of Mithila's great poet Vidyapti indicates that the Karnats started the patronization of dramas and artists came from South India to perform in Mithila.

Maithili Language's purest form evolved during the era of Karnat Dynasty. The dynasty gave another important cultural heritage to Mithila called the Panjee system.

Mithila matrimonialtraditions includes four days ofmarriageceremonies called: Chautrthi, Barsait, Madhushravni, Kojagara, and finally Duragman (the first homecoming of the bride).

Also, mundan ceremony is a very popular tradition in Mithila where a child's hair is shaved for the first time, accompanied by bhoj (a party) and (sometimes extravagant) celebrations.

The marriage is traditionally fixed using complex genealogical tables, called Panchang among Brahmins and Karna Kayasthas.

This was the genealogical system of lineage. The people who kept and maintained the records of lineage were called the Panjikars.

The Saurat village of Madhubani till today conducts mass marriage ceremony basrd upon this panjee system. The marriages of maithil brahmin and karna kayastha fixed here eventually called siddhant.

The Karnats were also great patron of art and literature. In the court of Hari Singh Dev the Royal Priest was Pt. Kameshwar Thakur the author of 'VARNA RATNAKAR', which is considered to be the first prose, an encyclopedia in any north Indian language. Pt. Kameshwar Thakur later became founder of Oinwar Dynasty.
