Depression Can Doubles The Risk for Dementia

If you are suffering from depression, the risk of dementia later in life almost doubled.. This says British BBC, that bases itself on recent research.
Experts already knew that the two diseases often occur together, but until now it was not known if one leads to another. Two studies in the U.S. journal Neurology today seem to indicate that having depression is indeed often leads to dementia, but about the 'why' touch still in the dark.

The scientists emphasise that the research results show a link and no cause. There can be other possible playing factors, such as the chemistry in the brain, feeding and the time which spends someone on social contacts.

Dr. Jane Saczynski of the University of Massachusetts, who led both studies, said: "We do not know if depression is the cause of dementia, but there is a number of ways in which depression may increase the risk. Thus, the inflammation of brain tissue that occurs in depression, contribute to dementia. A number of proteins in the brains that grow when someone is depressed, may play a role. The second study showed a direct link between depression and dementia. Someone with two or more depression is almost twice as likely to have dementia. More research is needed to show why the two diseases are connected.More research is needed to show why the two diseases are connected.
