The Ideal ManThe call for man to know himself is that which can help him to be ideal in his ways. The word ideal in this context has to do with the rightness of one's actions as opposed to wrongness. For one to be ideal means to be in conformity with the norms and values of the society. That is, to do such things which are termed good by the society and seek the general approval of humanity. In our contemporary society, ideal men are seen as those who are wealthy, living strong financial base or on the seat of power. But the question to ask is that ‘to what extent can this above assertion be said to be true?' I did not suffice to say being wealthy or politically influential is wrong, but these should not be criteria for measuring the idealness of any man, unless such wealth or position is aimed at boosting the quality of the standard of living of fellow human beings. I don't agree with you because taking care of oneself first is never a crime. After all, if one is getting burnt by fire, he quenches it first before thinking of his dying neighbour. I quite agree with you. After all, you still endeavour to rescue your neighbour after taking care of yourself. What about those that won't even raise their eyebrow. The command ‘love your neighbour as yourself' is not applicable to them. An ideal man is he who is altruistic i.e. he who shows love to his fellow human being and sees others as part of himself and not by any means above them. A call for man to be ideal is a call for him to be honest, truthful, just, patriotic, patient, humane, to love his neighbour as himself, moderate and be rational in his thinking. In conclusion, this world would be a better place if the pre-occupation of all men were to benefit the lots of their fellow mankind and shun all forms of moral decadences, which have eaten deep into our society like a deadly cancer. If our society must breed a morally upright and ideal future and fight all forms of societal evils in all spheres of human endeavours, be it educational, political, social and economical etc. it begins with you. |
