Tips on How to Prevent and Treat Headaches and Migraines Without the Use of Drugs

If like me you suffer from frequent headaches and migraines you will understand the pain and frustration involved. There is nothing worse than finishing work on a Friday afternoon only to experience the faint beginnings of a migraine or headache which inevitably will become worse as you sit in gridlocked traffic.

The problem with a migraine or headache is that they seemingly strike at random. It is extremely difficult to narrow down the exact cause of the pain. There are of course certain factors which can exacerbate the problem and make your headache even more uncomfortable. Factors which certainly do not help a headache are heat, noise and excessive light, and when it comes to migraines the only thing you want to do is lock yourself in a quiet, darkened room and hope it will stop torturing you.

Unfortunately people who do not suffer from frequent headaches do not fully understand that a bad headache or migraine can absolutely ruin your day, and in the case of a migraine the pain can persist for days. Also, headache sufferers can feel embarrassed visiting their doctor because they "only" get a "few headaches" a week. I myself used to suffer four or five headaches a week and as you can imagine it is very difficult to get on with your day when your head is pounding and there is no relief.

Finding any relief can be difficult, and if suffering from frequent pain chances are that you naturally reach for the painkillers. But the problem is that with overuse of painkillers such as aspirin or paracetamol your body (and the pain) can become immune to their effects. That is not to mention that regular long term use of painkillers such as aspirin can produce many unwanted side effects such as thinning of the blood.

The important thing to remember is that headaches are largely preventable and you do not need to rely on painkillers to provide relief. If for example you keep a "Headache Diary" you can narrow down what may be triggering your headache. The factors which can trigger a headache or migraine are too numerous to mention here and each person reacts differently to a particular trigger so a headache diary can help pinpoint why you are suffering.

I believe that you do not need to put up with constant headaches or migraines ruining your day. There are many lessons to learn with regards to preventing and treating the pain WITHOUT painkillers or drugs.
