Rhinoplasty At A Glance

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery as it is more commonly referred to, can be either medically necessary to solve breathing issues or it can be a cosmetic procedure, enhancing facial features and improving self esteem and confidence.  Every year approximately 500,000 people have some type of rhinoplasty by a plastic surgeon.  Dr. Calvert has made rhinoplasty a primary focus of his practice and uses the most advanced techniques possible to ensure the best outcome possible.

Should I Get Rhinoplasty?

You should certainly consider rhinoplasty surgery if your physician has suggested it to you to solve a breathing concern.  Medical rhinoplasty procedures can help with problems stemming from sleep apnea, ongoing sinus infections, repair of a broken nose or issues with chronic nose bleeds.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty can eliminate bumps on the nose, can decrease or increase the size of your nose, or can give either your whole nose, or part of your nose, a new shape.  If you are self conscience about your nose or spend a lot of time considering whether or not you would benefit from a nose job, a consultation with a Dr. Calvert who will answer your questions and help you determine if rhinoplasty would be of benefit to you.

What is Involved in the Surgery?

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts between one and two hours.  Before the surgery takes place, you will have a discussion about your medical background to ensure you are a good candidate for surgery.  You will also meet with the surgeon prior to surgery to determine what procedures will be done and to discuss what you want your nose to look like if you are having a cosmetic procedure.

During the surgery, most of the incisions are made inside the nose and the cartilage of the nose is reshaped, removed or added to in order to get the final look.  Usually dissolvable stitches will be used and you will have a splint-type apparatus to hold your nose in place for five to seven days after surgery.  You will experience some moderate discomfort and bruising, but this will soon be replaced with your eagerness to show off your new nose or your joy in being able to breathe easily.  You can expect to use pain medication for up to ten days after surgery and bruising can last several weeks.

It is especially important after rhinoplasty to follow your surgeon's directions and to keep your follow-up appointments.  This ensures the lasting success of your procedure.  Be sure to consult with the surgeon regarding exercise, wearing glasses, the use of make-up and returning to work.  Keep in mind that the final result from your surgery can be several months after your surgery takes place.

What are the Costs of Rhinoplasty?

Insurance will help with the costs of medically necessary procedures.  However, most insurance companies do not pay anything towards cosmetic procedures.  Many plastic surgeon offices provide their own financing options which can make rhinoplasty affordable.
