How Latisse Works

Hair growth has three phases. The growth phase is followed by a short transition phase, and then there is a dormant phase during which hair roots (follicles) produce no hair growth.

• Latisse also causes more than one eyelash to grow from many of the follicles and this thickens the lashes, enhancing the appearance of your eyes.
• To darken the lashes, Latisse causes a greater production of melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin and hair its color and pale eyelashes are lacking in melanin.

The active ingredient in Latisse is bimatoprost. This ingredient is also in three approved treatments for glaucoma :

• Lumigan®, manufactured by Allergan;
• Xalatan®, manufactured by Pfizer; and
• Travatan®, manufactured by Alcon.

These eyedrops work for glaucoma by lowering the pressure inside the eyes and promoting better outflow of aqueous humor. They also have the side effect of lengthening eyelashes. Latisse is a modified form of Lumigan.
