Let's get to know Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty (nose job) is a surgical treatment to improve the appearance or functioning of the nose. Many people go for Rhinoplasty surgery as they are unhappy with the way their nose looks or else they have breathing issues. This surgery is also known as nose surgery or nose reshaping, depending on the kind of treatment you are looking for. The nose surgery involves reshaping the bridge of the nose, changing the tip of the nose, or removing some bone cartilage. This cosmetic surgery really took off and became a mainstream choice for people, mainly among women. A general anesthesia is given to a patient while performing Rhinoplasty surgery. Some patients can also opt to have their nose job done under local anesthesia with heavy sedation. Rhinoplasty surgery is a big decision, so get your essential facts and doubts cleared before undergoing a surgery. Once you have decided to go ahead with the Rhinoplasty, you need to find a good, board-certified cosmetic surgeon or plastic surgeon. Look for the surgeon who specializes in nose jobs. Visit the surgeon and ask for before and after photos of patients who have undergone this surgery. This will help you to make your decision on what type of cosmetic surgery you want to undergo. Ask questions and make sure your surgeon answers it all.

A patient can have Rhinoplasty surgery for medical or cosmetic reasons. Medical reasons includes repair of a deviated septum. Cosmetic reasons include removal of a bump in the nose, making the nostrils smaller or larger, making the nose narrower, making the nose shorter, changing the tip of the nose or reshaping the cartilage. By using implants you can also make your nose look larger. Like any other surgery, here also you will experience pain and swelling later, this can continue for few weeks. Expenses for this surgery depend on where you live and to what extent you want the changes. Generally the expense ranges from $2000 to $4000. If you are getting this surgery under medical reason it may be covered under insurance policy. But, this is not the case if surgery is done under cosmetic reasons. To undergo this surgery a patient must be in his/her late teens.

Here are some instructions to be followed by patients to recover from this surgery-

1- After surgery, avoid blowing your nose for three weeks; blowing of nose can loosen the clots and cause bleeding.

2- Avoid exercise such as jogging, cycling or any other sporting activities for 3 weeks. These activities can disturb nasal healing.

3- You may experience difficulty in breathing. This is due to swelling of the internal nasal linings. After first week of surgery you can use Saline (salt water) nasal sprays to moisturize the lining and loosen any crusts. This will help you to improve your breathing.

4- For the first few weeks of the surgery keep your head elevated, this will help to reduce your swelling and improves breathing. Do not bend your head as this may cause bleeding. Try to sleep on a recliner or on 2 to 3 pillows.

5- If your bones were broken as part of the Rhinoplasty surgery then you need to keep ice packs to your nose and eyes this will limit the amount of swelling and bruising that may develop.

6- Avoid direct sunlight and heavy workout regime until the area has fully recovered.

After few weeks swelling and bruising will disappear, but nose will still continue to change shape over the next few months. Be patient until final shape is obtained.
