Heidi Montag - How Much Plastic Surgery Is Too Much?

Actress/singer Heidi Montag made news recently as well as the cover ofPeoplemagazine when she revealed that she recently underwent ten different cosmetic surgery procedures in a single day. Since most Americans probably don't have more than one such procedure in their life, if that, her revelation raised a lot of eyebrows among the public.

The cosmetic surgery industry has been thriving in recent years, especially since the introduction of lower-cost treatments such as Botox that can improve one's appearance for as little as a few hundred dollars. Compared to the cost of, say, breast augmentation surgery, which can cost $5000-$10,000, such treatments are affordable, even for middle class Americans. But how much surgery is too much?

Montag's procedure list reportedly included:

  • A mini brow lift
  • Botox on the frown area
  • A nose job revision
  • Fat injections in cheeks
  • A chin reduction
  • Neck liposuction
  • Ears pinned back
  • Breast augmentation revision
  • Liposuction on waist and hips
  • Buttock augmentation

The before and after photos of Heidi Montag show that she did, indeed, have quite a bit of work done. According to Montag herself, she nearly died after surgery. This isn't surprising, since even a single procedure can have complications that are occasionally fatal. To take ten times the risk at one time would be seen by many as tempting the fates.

Doctors perform millions of cosmetic surgery procedures each year on Americans. In fact, some 1000 women have a breast augmentation done each day. The fact that such procedures have become commonplace has led many people to assume that any cosmetic procedure is safe, and that it's perfectly OK to have more than one performed at once. While most are, these procedures are surgery, and many of them require anesthesia. Complications do occur, and these sometimes lead to fatalities.

In addition, each procedures requires its own timetable for healing. Your body views any invasive surgery as an injury, and recovery times can vary depending on what has been done.

If you are considering having one or more types of cosmetic surgery done, you should find a reputable doctor and ideally, speak with more than one. You will likely be encouraged to have them done one at a time. That may not work for your preferred timetable, but in the long run, it's better to be safe than sorry. Sometimes looking good simply takes time, especially if you're not a famous actress like Heidi Montag.
