How Do the Prayer Block Pain Signals Reaching the Brain?

Psypo Home Page

Being non religious, I was against the idea of prayer and meditation until I reached the profession of clinical medicine.

During my internship period, once, when I was in casualty, I remember, people rushed in with a saint (monk) who has just suffered a traffic accident. A car run over his left leg, shearing the flesh and breaking the bones !! I could see his legs hanging out from his body as if it is tied to it with only a ribbon of skin and flesh!

But, to my surprise, his face!……it was smiling !!…..as if nothing has happened. He told me “hey, doc…I don’t want your injections. I have already healed myself” he rose his head a little, looked up and continued “I prayed and he took my pain away” !! We (the hospital) could not save him, but he could “save” his smile until the last breath…

Thereafter, during my pre-rounds I used to ask patients “do you pray? does it give you any relief ?”

I have met 34 such people who had significant relief from prayers. I have made a mini statistic work with the data (the religion and name of god is not taken in to consideration) :). It was like this,

Illness healed by prayer
No of patients

Pain (chronic headache, neuralgia etc)
24

Sleeplessness
4

Blood pressure
3

Mental illness
2

Cancer
1

I don’t know what the miracle happened in with the man who  suffered from cancer. However, maximum cure rate (24/34) was for pain, and without much strain (only two web searches and three reference books) I could find the reason. It isEndorphin!!

Endorphin is a chemical secreted in our brain (at anterior pituitary and hypothalamus). It is almost similar to the narcotic drug morphine, but 200 times more potent than it.

Endorphin is themost potent of all the pain killers!!. It is secreted in more amounts when we pray or meditate. (In that sense we can call it as the “God hormone”, I am sorry). Endorphin act at the same site morphine do (opioid receptor) and block pain signals.

Like the morphine, endorphin too..

  • Calm your mind

  • Lower your blood pressure

  • Help you sleep better

  • Boost your immunity (may be this is how it beat cancer)

  • And many more…

NB: Morphine being 200 times weaker than endorphin, but “travel through same road” of endorphin it will create “traffic blocks” and affect the normal action of endorphin. So, using morphine will cause serious physical, mental and “spiritual” side effects. Morphine is not an alternative to prayer and meditation. But there are working alternatives to prayer that can stimulate your endorphin secretion, that I will tell you later !!
