WORKPLACE SAFETY TIPSWORKPLACE SAFETY TIPS (1) Make sure the work area is clean at all times.Every material/object must have assigned storage location. This will not only provide a conducive and productive environment for the workers,it will also reduce accidents to a manageable level. Moreover, exposure to hazardous materials will be reduced. (2)Make use of engineering solutions in preference to personal protective equipments that may not be comfortable for the workers and difficult to enforce. For example,in a production process,a worker climbs to the top of the ceiling in other to effect a change from one stage to another using a ladder.Another version of the same process make use of remote control to effect the change. This latter version is preferable because it is safer eliminating the danger of possible falls while climbing. (3) If you observe that a machine is becoming unsafe to work with, bring it to the attention of the authority so that it can be attended to immediately before it causes any harm. (4) Replace hazardous materials or equipments with less hazardous ones. These can be achieved by conducting research aimed at replacing these materials/equipments. (5)Make sure that all machinery/equipments are maintained and always in order. There is no gainsaying it that this is the kingpin of all workplace safety tips.Management must keep watch on all equipments that are worn out/damaged with use.Such equipments must either be maintained immediately, replaced or withdrawn from usage. A good preventive maintenance is better than the best safety program. And of course the former is cheaper. This is however not to say that one should be discarded for the other. (6) Every task to be performed must have instructional manual which not only spell out the procedure but also highlight the safety precautions to be taken. All such instructions must be very clear without any ambiguity. Workers must be trained to perform all jobs that are perceived to be risky in nature. (7) The first aid box must be up to date, and the position must be known to the workers 8) Employers should occasionally find out what the emloyees are doing especially to ensure that they are following the laid down procedure. If not find out why. (9) Ensure that you do not carry loads that are higher than your eye level. You may cause accident with them. (10)All employees must have access to all emergency numbers such as fire service, ambulance, security, police ete.Workers should know where safety equipments are kept and how to use them. The first aid box must be within easy reach (11)Do not read while walking. It might cause accident. Use hand rail when walking through the stairway. (12) While management must ensure that the appropriate safety wear is provided to ensure the safety of the workers, the workers on their part must endeavor to put on these materials even though they may not be too comfortable. |
