HOW TO QUIT THAT HABIT

A habit according to the dictionary is:

  1. A regular tendency or purpose. It is also defined as,

  1. A practice that is hard to give up or

  1. A mental constitution or attitude. It was derived from the Latin word, habeo   which means to have.

Simply put, a habit is the consistent performance of a specific kind of activity or procedure in other to achieve a purpose or goal. Habits can be formed unconsciously. We all have habits and they are either negative or positive habits. Habits are common to humans.

For the purpose of this session, we will be dealing with how to quit those habits that you desire to improve badly.

I said earlier, that habits are common to humans and we all have habits. Your habits determine who you are. They give you a mental constitution and attitude. So whichever attitude you desire to improve today, HELP HAS COME.

If you have a habit you desperately want to improve, I would like to let you know that you are not less than anyone else in the world, you are not abnormal and you are also not alone as you desire to improve your habits. I also have bad feeding habits I am working on improving. Years back, I used to have the habit of judging people. I was stereotyped, and saw nothing wrong with it. It was not until I started messing up my relationships with people, that I knew I had to change. I sought help and today I am a better person and I am still improving various areas of my life. Habits are everywhere.

It only takes a courageous person to come out of his or her comfort zone to seek a change in his or her life and ask for help. HELP HAS COME NOW!! So take advantage of this opportunity and SURPRISE THE WORLD. BECOME A BETTER YOU!! IT IS POSSIBLE AND EASY TO ACHIEVE, IF YOU PUT YOURSELF CONSISTENTLY TO FOLLOWING THESE TIPS TODAY.

First, take a sheet of paper and list the impact of your habit on your life and the lives of those around you. Here is how to do it. First add your FAMILY, WORK, SCHOOL and your other spheres of contact as HEADINGS OF THE TABLE. List the habit by the left, and then score 2 for every POSITIVE impact your habit has brought or will bring to your sphere of contact, and 1 for every NEGATIVE impact that habit has brought or will bring to your sphere of contact.

I will like to state here, that this is just a simple SELF HELP TECHNIQUE, and not a formula to condemn anybody. You will need the help of an objective umpire, most preferably, your family members or an honest friend with this table, so as to get an objective score sheet of your habit(s)

Take a look at the list and if the helpful impact score outweighs your negative impact you have a healthy habit and if it does not, don't worry, like I said earlier, that you are not less than anyone, neither are you abnormal. The following tips will help you. They are time tested and proven.

  1. IDENTIFY THE HABIT: First of all you have to identify the fact that there is a habit you have formed overtime you would like to change. Make a checklist of the habit and the circumstances that activate that habit. It will be a helpful tool in preparing you for the change process.

  1. ADMITTANCE: Admitting that the habit is a challenge you have to confront headlong, and that it is having a negative effect on you, your activities and those around you, is the beginning of the healing process; it frees you from the baggage of bulk passing, self-righteousness, denials and self deceit.

  1. SEEK HELP: Like I said earlier, it takes courage to seek help. But when you do, you open up opportunities for improvement. It is important for you to talk to someone who you respect. Someone who will treat your challenge with a high level of confidentiality. Anybody you want to talk to should be someone who can take you through what I call a habit/self improvement process, aimed at giving you a positive orientation. It should not be dehumanizing, demeaning, assaulting or judgmental. Any improvement process is supposed to be exciting. Forming a habit is NO CRIME. I advice you speak to your spiritual leader, or better still call me on 07028080311 or send me an email.

  1. MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE FOR A CHANGE PROCESS AND BE ACCOUNTABLE TO SOMEONE: Seeking help is just the beginning of the process. You have to make sure you submit yourself, like I said earlier, wholly to whatever self improvement process your mentor suggests, and stick it. Hold yourself accountable. You SHOULD also submit yourself to your mentor's improvement checklist.

  1. SET GOALS AND ACTIVITY LIMITS: A Goal simply put, is a list of desired actions with dates. Always set daily goals that lead to the achievement of your habit improvement regime. The human mind takes time to adjust to change, so while going through this change process, you have to set the limit of activities you carry out in-line with your improvement class, so as not to be discouraged when you do not achieve all of them. Take it bit by bit, line by line, and little by little and you will get there.

  1. CELEBRATE YOURSELF ALWAYS: You have to understand that improving or replacing a habit is a tough decision, so whenever you say no to that old habit and embrace the new and positive habit you desire, celebrate it as a victory and a plus to yourself.

  1. BE DETERMINED: Let's face the fact; there will be times when you will want to give up or even unconsciously fall back to that old habit, especially if the change process is not exciting or due to some other reason, just get up clean up yourself, and continue with the improvement process. It is not the end of the world and that does not make you less than human.

We all make mistakes. I have made mistakes in life that made me want to hit myself on the head with a baseball bat. Someone once defined success as the ability to minimize your mistakes.

Like I said earlier, HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE, CHECK THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MADE YOU RELAPSE, AND WORK WITH YOUR MENTOR TO DEAL WITH, OR IF POSSIBLE ELIMINATE THEM. Nothing worth celebrating ever comes easy. YOU ARE WORTH CELEBRATING, so put all you have in it, put all your best in the improvement process, and nature itself will reward you. LIFE ALWAYS REWARDS THE DETERMINED SOUL. DON'T GIVE UP, STICK TO IT, THAT CHANGE IS POSSIBLE.

  1. CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT: So as not to be distracted during your self improvement process, it is advisable, that you avoid any mental, physical or social interaction with anyone and anything that will arouse the desire to fall back to that old habit. The best method is to create a positive substitute by:

..Making new friends who will help and encourage you finish your change process.

..Listening the right messages and stuff that will inspire you for change.

.. Avoiding places scenarios and thoughts that will ignite your desire to fall back on the old habit.

So far, So good. These tips if practiced will bring out the best in you and, make you a better person. Once again, you can call me for counseling on 2347028080311. Thanks for your time and efforts.
