Does Age have an effect on the performance at workplace?

The Question is very important that whether age affects the performance of employees at workplace. Different people have different point of views. Some people say that it affects negatively and some says that age has positive affects on performance of employees at workplace. But according to my point of view, age affects negatively as well as positively to job performance of employees at workplace. There are a lot of reasons

It affects negatively because it is believed that

  1. Job performance declines with the increasing age of employees.
  2. Workforce is aging.
  3. Individual skills-particularly speed, strengths, agility, co-ordination decay over time and prolonged job boredom and lack of intellectual stimulation contribute to reduce performance at workplace.
  4. Motivational level of employees declines as the age of retirement coming nearer.
  5. Older workers are perceived as lacking flexibility and being resistance to new technology that's why organizations are actively seeking for individuals who are adaptable and open to change.
  6. Also negativity associated with old age workers clearly hinders the hiring of old workers.
  7. Also absentees of old workers may affect performance at workplace because due to poor health associated with aging and larger recovery period that old workers needed when injured.

Age also affects positively to performance of employees at workplace because

  1. An old age employee has more experience than employees who are less old and mature.
  2. An old age worker brings positive qualities at work like good and better judgment.
  3. Commitment to quality of work.
  4. Lower absentees than employees who have less experience or fresh.
  5. Lower turnover that results in job satisfaction because older employees have lower job opportunities than younger ones that's why they have greater concentration on work and long tenure provides high wage rates, longer period vacations, and more attractive pension benefits that results in job satisfaction.
