How to approach a teenager's bedroom - from a design point of view

While it may not the the room in the house that you will spend a great deal of time, it is vital that your teenage son or daughter feel comfortable in their bedroom. This is the room where they will spend hours getting ready for formative days in their lives, as well as all that time studying and sleeping!

1 -Keep them involved. They are very nearlly adults, so keep them involved at every stage in the process. While your tastes will no doubt differ, it's important that they get some way to what they want - after all they are the ones that are going to be spending most of their time in the room.

2 -Think about how they will use the space.A desk with a large surface area may be vital for someone with a creative streak, while computer ports are more important for someone with an interest in IT. Consider the ways in which the bedroom is going to be used before you spend a penny.

3 -Think long term.A bed on special offer may be tempting, but don't succomb! Cheaper furniture tends to have a poorer build quality, after all - there's got to be a reason it's cheap! Read up on the furniture you're looking at, is there a warranty? What is it made of? It won't save you anything if you have to replace it in a year or two's time.

4 -Build quality. It's likely that the furniture which goes into your teenager's bedroom is going to get some hard use, so furniture that feature's a scratch resistant coating (for example) should be considered.

5 -Inspiring design.Would you rather go to work on a wallpaper pasting table or on a sturdy solid oak desk with gorgeous detailing? It's the same for your teen's bedroom, don't exect them to make do with furniture you wouldn't use yourself. Consider furnishing their room in a matching range of bedroom furniture for a truly professional feel.

The more thought you put into this process at the beginning, the more your son or daughter will get out of it in the long-run.
