Tap Water: is it Good or Bad for You?

Is tap water good for you to drink, cook with, shower in or even brush your teeth with?  If you have effective home tap water purifiers, then yes, it's the best choice for drinking, cooking, showering and for all of your other needs. But, if you don't have a home purifier, you are taking chances, when it comes to your health.   Read this article to find out what you MUST DO to protect your health.

Is tap water good for you to drink?

Without tap water purifiers, you may be drinking pesticides, herbicides, industrial solvents, gasoline additives and other synthetic and organic compounds that are health hazards.  There may be tiny parasitic cysts in your glass that can cause illness or even death, because cysts are resistant to public disinfection methods.

The EPA warns that you can be consume cysts when brushing your teeth or by washing fresh fruits and vegetables in unfiltered water.  They may even be present in bottled brands.

You are most certainly drinking chlorine or another chemical disinfectant.  No matter what disinfection method that your treatment facility uses, you are definitely drinking disinfection byproducts, known as THMs.  They are human carcinogens.

Is tap water good for you to cook with?

If you have tap water purifiers on your sinks, you should leave them in the "on" position when gathering water to cook with.  THMs are released into the atmosphere of your home along with the steam from your pots.  Inhalation is just as hazardous as consumption.

As for taste, chlorine spoils the taste of coffee and other foods.  It's also a salt, so it affects the saltiness of the foods and can contribute to high blood pressure.

Is tap water good for you to shower in?

The cosmetic industry first developed tap water purifiers for showerheads, because chlorine dries out the hair and skin.  It changes the color of color-treated hair and makes your hair more difficult to manage.

As time went by, we learned that THMs and other carcinogens can be absorbed through the skin.  As with cooking, they become airborne in a hot shower and we inhale them.  Researchers have found that people who drink, cook with and shower in chlorinate water are twice as likely to develop bladder cancer, as those who don't.

So, not only do you need to protect yourself in the kitchen.  You also need to protect yourself in the shower.  But, you have to shop carefully and read product performance data, because most showerhead filters and many kitchen tap water purifiers do not remove THMs.  Some only remove chlorine.

Bottled Water is NO Solution

Buying bottled brands is not a good solution for your health or the environment.  Researchers found that 22% of the brands tested (all of the major ones) contained at least on chemical contaminant at levels higher than those allowed by state and federal governments.
