How to Set Your Best Goals for 2009

Your life has many parts to it- all of which are important. How do you possibly make progress in each area this year with how busy you already are?

Rather than setting out to accomplish 5-10 things in each area, which for some reason I used to think was realistic, simply identify 2-3 things in each area that you would like to complete by the end of the year.

In the spirit of accomplishment, let’s get right into the action. Get out a pen and paper.

Below are all the 7 major life areas. Write them along the left side of the paper with at least a few lines between them (or if you are more visual, you can draw a pie with each area having its own slice).

  • Career/Work

  • Family

  • Relationships

  • Health & Leisure

  • Financial

  • Service

  • Spiritual

  1. Think about each one individually and ask yourself how satisfied you are with it.

  2. How close would you say its importance is with the amount of time and energy you typically put into it?

  3. Write down 2 or 3 things you could do this year that would help you feel happier in that particular area of your life.

NOTE:Nothing is too small if you feel that by accomplishing it your life would be more balanced, satisfying, and meaningful, or that is closes the gap between what is important to you and the energy you put into it.

Need some ideas? Here are some examples in a few of the areas to get you moving:

Career/Work:

  • Attend a class or seminar on a subject that will help you grow professionally in your field of work

  • Get a job at a company with whom you you’ve been wanting to work

  • If you own your own business, get access to more “qualified” clients, or get your client files organized

Financial:

  • Pack your lunch

  • Get a Living Trust

  • Save $50 more per month for your retirement

Health/Leisure:

  • Go hiking

  • Get a massage

  • Get a full physical

These are just a few examples. When you finish your list (or pie) put a target completion date next to each item so you know what things to focus on first. Put your 2009 goals somewhere you can see them.  As you move through your goals, check them off.

Simple you say? Setting yourself up to feel a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment with your life doesn’t have to be complicated.
Now, Go Confidently.
