OTC acne treatment medication is available in the form of gels, creams, and lotions. Those with sensitive skin should opt for a cream or a lotion. Those with oily skin should opt for gels as it has alcohol content which will dry up excess skin oil. If you decide to go in for OTC acne products, choose a product with low strength, at first and then enhance to a product that is stronger.

Acne Treatment through Oral Antibiotics or Tropical Antimicrobials

Incase of severe acne, the person has to consult dermatologist who will prescribe oral antibiotics or tropical antimicrobials. Oral antibiotics help to bring down the ‘propionibacterium', which is the primary cause for acne. The prescription is only for a period of six months. If a person is suffering from severe cystic acne, Isotretinoin is prescribed. It is also recommended in situations where other forms of medication are not working. Topical antimicrobials, such as sodium sulfacetamide and clindamycin control acne by working on acne causing bacterium. Severe acne can also be treated through topical retinoids, such as tretinoin, adapalene, and tazarotene.
