Comparative Study On Energy Cost, Gait Pattern & Quality Of Life Between The Traumatic & Dysvascular Below Knee(Bk) Amputee

One of the major causes of disability is amputation. Sometimes it is associated with the psychological factors. Amputee with depression, anxiety, hypertension, isolation etc. can loose the control on their normal gait pattern & prosthesis. Thus psychological factors affect the Quality of life of the amputee as well as the locomotion. A huge number of cases regarding the earlier mentioned type have been recorded in the Rehabilitation center like National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped, Kolkata.

A study has been performed with these cases. 7 Traumatic & 7 Dysvascular amputees have been selected for the study with their consent to the institute. The ultimate target of the study was to analyze the energy cost, gait parameters & the Quality of life of those subjects. All the subjects had conventional BK prosthesis with SACH foot. The fitment & alignment of the prosthesis have been checked by the Prosthesis specialists. The gait parameters for level walking have been studied on a fixed 60 m lap. The Cosmed® K4b2 has been used to study the respiratory & energy parameters. The subjects have been instructed to perform their usual & normal gait pattern & being sure about that the test has been performed. The subjects have been offered 3-4 minutes to get accommodated with the test procedure, instrument attachments & the lab environment. The subjects' diet has been maintained & fitness has been certified by the physicians. Quality of life was evaluated using WHOQOL-BREF scale.

The result indicates that the all the subjects lead almost similar quality of life. Their gait pattern much more stabilized within their limitation of disabilities. The velocity has been found higher (11%) for traumatic than the dysvascular group. But the dysvascular group has consumed 17% more energy to perform their normal gait through the 6o m lap.
