The term sciatica can be a misleading term when associated with causes of lower back pain. It is important to clarify that sciatica is not just a condition the term can also be used to diagnose many different signs of a condition or illness. Another misconception is that sciatica is always caused by a problem with the sciatic nerves. However, there could be other reasons for example, compression to the base of the nerve or a ruptured vertebrate or disc.

Sciatica can become an issue for many pregnant women during the third trimester. It becomes a problem when the uterus applies pressure to the sciatic nerve as it expands during the pregnancy. There can also be complications as the weight of the womb compresses the spines vertebrate against the nerve endings. Another factor with pregnancy particularly, in the final trimester is the pressure on the sciatic nerve as a result of the increased weight of the womb pulling the spinal column forward. All of these conditions combined can result in lower back pain for many pregnant women.

Many people with lower back problems can experience muscles spasms. When these spasms are located in the back area they are usually the result of the piriformis muscle constricting. When this occurs it also constricts the sciatic nerve resulting in the pain you get in the lower back. This condition can be aggravated further by our posture particularly, when we are sitting in one position for any length of time. If you work in office and you spend most of your time sitting behind a desk it is advisable to take 5 minute breaks and stretches to alleviate the pressure on your back.

The most effective way to relieve back pain caused by sciatica is to treat the condition that actually causes it. This will involve determining where the nerve is being constricted and eliminate the pressure by providing a support with a physical aid. This will in most cases solve or at least alleviate the problem. If the pain is derived from a genetic condition the solution to the problem would be the same.

For more chronic pain additional treatments may be required. This can take the form of massaging the area of the pain in order to stretch and soften the tense muscles around the affected area. By making the muscles suppler helps to reduce the inflammation around the nerve and helps to relieve the pain.

If further treatment is required then a program of physiotherapy could be used to relieve the back pain. It is important to remember that the symptoms of sciatica can be caused by poor posture. Patients need to become more aware of how they use their bodies and change their posture if they feel it is aggravating the problem. For example, try to avoid sitting or standing in one position for too long. Ensure your sleeping position adequately supports your back and that you sleep on a quality mattress. If you sit for any length of time use a back support and stretch your back regularly.
