We spend our entire childhood waiting for what seems like forever to become an adult. No matter what we do, we can't seem to get there quick enough. Then we FINALLY get there and, all of sudden, our lives jump to hyper speed. For example, it's already 2010 and I can't believe how quickly the past decade has flown by. I know I'm not the only one. If I had a dime for every time I heard someone say "I can't believe 2009 is over already", I sure as hell wouldn't be writing articles for free. On top of a quick decade, I find my thirties rapidly approaching. In fact, it feels like they've been rapidly approaching since I turned that much desired age of 21. And as they approach, I have found myself creating a list. A list that I think everyone should have. It's a list of certain things that everyone should have crossed off by the time they hit 31 years old. Its just a few things that I feel might help to enhance your life in the future. Some of them are obvious, but some just might surprise you.
.)Jump out of an airplane.- Or take on whatever one of your biggest fears may be. Nothing is more liberating than conquering a fear that you may have had your entire life.
.)Try one profession other than the one you might think you want to do for the rest of your life. - We are programmed to assume that we should know exactly what we want to do while we're in college. This is why we are forced to pick a major and a direct interest to spend most of our time studying. Some of us are lucky enough to know, but I'd say most of us haven't got a clue. The real learning about ourselves comes after graduation when we are able to feel out certain jobs, careers, and lifestyles. Don't settle just because you think you have to. Test the waters a bit and find something you really enjoy being part of. Don't be discouraged by people telling you you're supposed to be doing something specific. They're probably just jealous.
.)Date. Date. Date. - We do a lot of changing from our late teens to our late twenties. Is it smart to commit to someone if we're going to be a completely different person at 28 than we were at 18? Sure, there are exceptions to this rule. And I understand the "fairly tale" of being able to marry a high school sweetheart...But this is the best time of your life to focus on yourself. Get out there and meet tons of new people and make sure you find out who you really are before you decide to take on the life of someone else as well. (This is not to be confused with being "promiscuous". That's up to you. Proceed at your own risk).
.)Start saving. Early!- Start up in high school. Even better, start up in junior high. Find a savings account with high interest and put in as little as $20 a month. Especially when you're young and your actual financial responsibilities are limited. You'll be surprised how much it will all add up!
.)Travel to at least 3 different countries and spend at least 2 weeks in each one.- I can't emphasize enough how important it is to escape from your bubble and experience everything the world has to offer. Learn about different cultures, religions, and lifestyles. Really open your eyes and especially your mind to be sure you take it all in. Where do you get the money to do all of this? See #4!
.)Make eye contact and say hello to at least 3 people you've never met before on a daily basis. - We currently live in a completely introverted world with much of our social interaction taking place via the internet or text messaging. Don't spend all of your time staring at a screen. Sometimes we forget how important is to interact physically with people. Make connections that don't include clicking on an "accept" or "deny" button.
.)Choose one month and say "Yes" to everything you would normally say "No" to.- Jim Carrey did it. Why can't you? This is basically about leaving your comfort zone and coming out of your shell. Experience things you normally wouldn't have experienced. You'll be introduced to a whole new world.
.)Do at least one charitable thing a month.- Selfless acts are ultimately more rewarding than anything you do for yourself. Just try it once and I promise you'll have a brand new addiction.
.)Learn to play a musical instrument of your choice.-Something other than the triangle or cymbals, people. An instrument that really does a number on your brain as you try to figure it out. The result is taking on something that will be both physically and mentally challenging, as well as rewarding, for the rest of your life.
.)Reconnect with someone from your past that you regret falling out of touch with.- How often do we look back and wish we had kept in touch with "so and so"? With the current state of social networking on the internet, it is easy to reconnect with someone we might really miss being in contact with. Make that connection again and this time, be sure not to let it dissipate.
