Present and Positive
The first key to creating affirmations that work is to make them present and positive. Affirmations, by nature, are used to fix something in our lives that we don't like. We've been doing something we don't like and we're going to use affirmations to change.
Pay attention to that sentence – We'vebeendoing something wedon'tlike. When we start to evaluate past performance it's easy to dwell on the negative. As you think negatively about your past – you will continue to act negatively. Stating affirmations in the present allows you to break free from the past. This doesn't mean that we ignore the past and how we got where we are.
Affirmations should also be positive. This should go without saying. You're trying to fix something you don't like by replacing it with something that you do like. What do you like that is negative? I believe that part of our existence is to experience joy. Make your affirmation positive so you can enjoy it.
Stop Lying
When you tell yourself something you're not, you're mind tries to reject it. Affirmations, when worded incorrectly, can cause tension and frustration because you know you're not what you're saying.
Think about it. What thoughts do you have when you tell yourself something you're not? Do any of these sound familiar? Yeah right! You wish. That's not me. Liar!
The trick is to stop lying. Instead of telling yourself something that you're not, change it to be something that you are becoming or that your arenow.
Implementing this change is as easy as adding the word – now. Instead of beginning your affirmation with "I am..." try using "I amnow..." Adding in the word now removes the conflict in your mind about past performance because you arenowperforming in a new way.
Take Action
This is perhaps the most important part to affirmations that work. When you take action on your affirmation statement, you reaffirm the statement and make it more and more a part of your reality.
Isn't the ultimate goal of using affirmations to become something we currently are not? If you do not take action that is in alignment with your affirmations then you are wasting your time. Your affirmation will not work.
You must take action in alignment with your affirmation in order for it to work. Period.
Having said that, be patient with yourself. Just because you start using affirmations one day doesn't mean that you will change and be what you are affirming that same day. It takes time. There will be days when your actions are in line with your affirmations and there will be days when they aren't. Have patient persistence and eventually you'll have more days where your actions are in alignment and you actually will be what you were affirming.
