How Important Is Daily Meditation?

In a world that launches each sunrise with underlying white noise from barely perceptable traffic and household appliances, a quiet morning isn't quiet. By the time the you rush out the door to work, your entire equilibrium is assaulted with constant humming, banging, clicking, buzzing and ringing sounds. Where can you go for relief? The answer is simple: To your Meditation Zone. Mention the word, "Meditation" and the instant image is of an exotic guru chanting repetitiously with whiffs of incense filling the air. Meditation is so much simpler than that.

There are many techniques for mediation. The first and most prevalent one can be effected nearly anywhere. Imagine you are watching TV. Now, turn the volume to mute. There is noise around you but it has no sound. Next, dim the picture until all that's left is a vague screen. Breath control when meditating is extremely important. It provides the proper rhythm that steadies the psyche long enough to reinvigorate you. Inhale slowly to the count of 8. Then, exhale. Notice how your body begins to slow to this rhythm? Concentrate on the blank screen. Close your eyes and continue your breath control. Remain in this suspended state for at least 5 minutes. You'll be revived and refreshed as you slowly return the sound and the picture to the screen.

The second meditation technique is done while standing with feet apart, arms limply at your sides, palms facing out, head comfortably forward and knees slightly bent so that hips rest over your heels. Breathe rhythmically to the count of 10, inhaling and exhaling, concentrating on an imaginary line from the top of your head downward through the center of your body. This is balance technique for meditation. You concentrate on your weight evenly distributed until you reach a comfort level.

There are other meditation techniques like Tai Chi, Chi Gung and Yoga, all of which require some form of body movement while meditating on each position of the body. Meditation is easiest when there is lack of distraction. Other techniques can be as simple as selecting a particular piece of music that soothes the mind and body. Or, meditate on certain sounds like wind, rain or the sea that bring about a sense of inner harmony. Auto-suggestion is a type of meditation where you mentally relocate yourself to a place of serenity. Then, there is also auto-hypnosis. This is meditation whereby you repeat words like "peace", "tranquility", "serenity" over and over, until you have reached a comfortable level of self-sedation.
