Identity theft is rapidly growing to being the worst crime people hear about. It can take place in big cities and little towns.

What is identity theft? It is defined by the as stealing one's identity to use and commit fraud. It is done to rob a person of their money.

To be knowledgeable in what ways a person can steal your identity, how the crime works and how you can prevent it, a video about this crime is your best way to learn about it.

Should you be lucky enough to obtain a copy of the identity theft videotape, share it with friends and family to make them aware of the white collar crime. It is important that everyone knows about this crime because the hassle that goes along with it is something no one should have to go through.

The video will demonstrate six steps that thieves use to steal your data and your identity. This video should be a top priority for those wanting to know more about identity thieves.

1. Dumpster Diving
By rummaging through your garbage, thieves can often times obtain your information. It is important for you to be rid of those documents that contain both personal and financial data carefully. If you do not have a shredder machine, burning the document as well as shredding it by hand can help curb this type of thieving.

2. Stealing your wallet or purse
This is the most common way a person can steal one's identity. What you may think as a common theft could turn quickly into identity theft.
To avoid being a victim in two ways, keep your belongings close to you in public. Should you become a victim, remember that all your bank information is in your possession, contact your credit card carrier as well as your bank to inform them of the loss.

3. Online scams
Thieves will try and compromise your data by sending you emails that offer prizes or other neat offers. They will ask you information like your full name, address, credit card number and other personal information for you to obtain what they have for you. Do not give them this information. The majority of these emails are scams.

4. Snail Mail
Thieves do not mind going through your mail after the mailman or mailwoman delivers it. They don't mind getting your information this way. If possible, try to get the mail shortly after it has been delivered.

5. Your Home
If a thief wants to break into your home to steal much needed documents for identity theft, there really isn't anything stopping them. This includes you being in your home. However, getting a secure lock as well as getting your neighbors to look after it can help if you and your family are gone.

6. Filling Out Documents
A thief will take pride in looking over your shoulder as you fill out documents for just about anything including credit or other things. Fill out the information in a more secluded place.

Once the thieves have your data, they can use it in five different ways. The video will explain how.

1. Open a new credit card account in your name

2. Purchase a new vehicle in your name with a auto loan

3. Should they be arrested, they will give the police your name instead of their own. Should they be released and not show up, a warrant will be issued in your name.

4. They can open up new bank accounts in your name and write bad checks.

5. They can call your credit card company pretending to be you and change the address on your file.
