Women are constantly bombarded with images of fit and trim women and sometimes it seems impossible to ever come close to looking like that. Not trying seems easy but you may be surprised how much you can accomplished if you just take the first step.

Here's 7 ways to get going on an exercise program:

1. Not every exercise program is right for everybody. Consult with a trainer to get a baseline on your fitness level and you can avoid injuries and frustration.

2. Set realistic targets. You will be frustrated if you try to reshape your body in a month. The program you choose should be practical and will not give you false hopes.

3. Weight lifting should be a part of everyones fitness program. You don't have to pump heavy iron to get the benefits, though. Light weights with more repetitions will get your muscles toned and make you stronger and you'll look better, too.

4. Don't let yourself fall into the habit of just repeating the same exercises over and over. Try to alternate muscle groups on different days of the week. If you keep a log of your exercise you'll stay motivated and get a better understanding of your progress.

5. Doing more isn't always better than doing less. Try for smooth movements instead of jerking and yanking the weight. You'll avoid injuries and each repetition will be more effective in building strength.

6. Do the same exercises over and over and you'll soon lose your motivation. Switch your schedule around with some different exercises and try to vary the weight levels and repetitions. You'll be surprised that you'll feel new muscles with what you thought was a very similar exercise.

7. A workout partner is a great way to stay motivated. It's harder to blow off going to the gym when someone else is counting on you to show up. Plus, a little competition will keep your head in the game.

There is no best way for everybody to get in shape so listen to your own body. If it's too hard or too easy you'll know by how you feel. Take advantage of fitness experts who can give you ideas on things you can do to get in shape faster. You'll get off on the right foot and you'll be on your way to looking and feeling fit.
