If you want to get rid of acne, it is important that you know what type of acne you are suffering from. This will enable you to seek the correct treatment.
Many people are confused and this is expected. Because acne itself is a complex condition and comes with many variations. For example, people may tend to confuse pimples and acne.
So, what are the difference between acne and pimples?
Well, let's put it this way. Pimple is simply a generalized term that is used to describe a breakout caused by blockage of the pores.
Yet, all the different types of acne can be described using the term acne lesion. These include whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cyst etc.
So, the next question is, what exactly are whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cyst?
We can group whiteheads and blackheads together and call them comedones. Comedones are considered the least severe form of acne lesion. They are usually the result of a sebaceous follicle getting plugged with sebum, hair and dead cells. Sometimes, there are also bacteria.
Whitehead is a closed comedo. The pore is inflamed and close. On the other hand, blackhead is an open comedo. The sebus is visible and discolored. Whether you are suffering from blackheads or whiteheads, do not try to force them open as it can leave scars or even cause infections.
Papules are usually quite small and elevated. Also, they usually don’t have a visible “head”. You should never try to squeeze them so as to minimize the potential of permanent scars.
The shape of pustules is similar to a dome and also filled with pus. There is a possibility of pustules to progress into cyst. However, they may also heal on their own without progressing to cyst and if that occurs, they will usually not leave any scars.
If you have pustules, you may have this tendency to pop them. Try not to do that as doing so can leave scars. However, it can be difficult not to do so when you are washing your face. In this case, just be as careful as you can.
Nodules are actually quite similar to papules, as far as appearance is concerned. However, nodules are more serious and go deeper into the skin. It can be quite painful and the chance of scarring is higher than other conditions.
For this more serious condition, you need to treat it with more care. And you may want to consider seeking medical help.
Another very serious condition is cyst. It can be considered the largest of acne lesions and are usually associated with pain and scarring. Just like nodules, if you have cysts, it is best that you seek medical help.
As you can see, there are many different types of acne and it can be easy to mix them up. If unsure, it is best to seek out professionals and clear up your doubts.
