Alzheimer sufferers have very special needs. They need a safe step stool for getting into bed or when trying to get on a bus. So what would you look for in a step stool when considering an Alzheimer sufferer? First, make sure that the step stool has a large standing surface so it is easy to see and to stand on or even turn around on, should the situation require it. Next, make sure that the step stool is rated for 500 pounds, this is very important if your loved one is a bit on the heavy side.

Please don’t buy a cheap step stool that has rungs like a ladder for your Alzheimer sufferer. These are just plain dangerous to use because you have to balance yourself on a 2 or 3 inch wide rung. Probably not something you want your elders doing.

I’ve seen some bus step stools made of metal. These step stools usually have legs which can make the step stool wobble on uneven surfaces. The legs also make it possible to get your foot caught under the step, especially if the vision of the person using it is not the best. Bus drivers at Alzheimer Assisted Living facilities have horror stories to tell about visually impaired seniors who couldn’t see very well and put their foot under the metal bus step stool instead of on top.

You want to keep your loved one safe, so take the time to consider who will use the step stool, where the step stool will be used, i.e. outside in the weather or in icy conditions. Lastly, what features does the step stool have to have to make it safe for your loved one. I hope these tips will help you when looking for a safe step stool for your Alzheimer sufferer.
