The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is supporting the voluntary actions of drug manufacturers regarding the use of nonprescription, over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold products in children.

The voluntary actions of the manufacturers are intended to:
(1) help prevent and reduce the misuse of these products in children, and
(2) better inform consumers about these products safe and effective use.

Specifically, drug manufacturers will be changing the product labels of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines to state"Do Not Use In Children Under 4 Years Of Age".Currently, most OTC cough and cold products state the age limit of 2 on its labels. Additionally, the manufacturers are introducing new child-resistant packaging and new measuring devices for use with the products.

Thus, over the next several months, manufacturers will be changing the labels to include the new recommendations and instructions. During this transition period, some instructions for using OTC cough and cold medicines in children will be different from others and may be quite confusing to the consumer. Therefore, it is always important to remember that the FDA recommends an age limit of 4 now compared to the previous age limit of 2.

The Humphreys & Peterson Law Firm is dedicated in protecting the rights of all consumers, especially the rights of young innocent children. If believe that your child or someone else’s child has suffered a serious permanent illness from taking any OTC cough and cold medicines while under the age of 4, it is important that you immediately contact a highly qualified attorney to protect your legal options.
