Were you anticipating a romantic dinner at a 5-Star restaurant? Did you spray down the sheets with your favorite cologne when you made the bed this morning? Did you hand write all of your Valentine’s Day coupons for your partner? Had you already visited Vicki’s Secret and purchased a new little ditty for your partner? Was your heart set on that special gift that you’ve been hinting around at?

Then BLAM, your partner blindsides you with the totally unexpected “This isn’t working anymore” or even worse “I’m in love with someone else” breakup. WTF!!! You had no idea that things were that far off base in your relationship. You weren’t expecting to get the ice cold V-Day split, it wasn’t a part of the plan. Here’s the upside, you are not alone (well, not alone in terms of the V-Day breakup), although that doesn’t make it feel any better, I know.

Here’s How To Survive Valentine’s Day Heartbreak:

  • Cry and get it over with.Set a timer for 1 hour and allow yourself that time to just cry. You have to set a limit or you’ll sob the whole day away, and trust me that’ll only make it worse.
  • Have a conversation with yourself.Look at yourself in the mirror and decide that you are done sobbing for now (you may again later) and tell yourself 10 reasons to love yourself today anyway.
  • Get rid of gifts you’d prepared for your ex-lover.Remove anything that you had prepared especially for your ex in anticipation of your romantic day. Don’t hang on to the cards, flowers, candies or cuddle with the stuffed animals. Let it all go immediately and release yourself of the painful burden of it.
  • Avoid calling your ex-lover.It will be tempting to call your ex to scream, curse, encourage guilt, beg them back, etc. but that will prove to make you feel even worse about the breakup and prevent you from salvaging the day. Don’t call your ex, no matter what.
  • Find a friend who is available to hang-out.There are plenty of other people who won’t be celebrating Valentine’s Day with a romantic partner. Go through your contacts, post an inquiry on Facebook and exhaust every possibility to locate a friend to hang-out with. Surrounding yourself with people will keep your thoughts from being totally consumed with the breakup.
  • Eat something sweet. It won’t do much more than taste good but for what it’s worth to indulge for a moment give yourself a treat. You deserve to have something good on Valentine’s Day.
  • Cry yourself to sleep. If you were really invested in the relationship you’ll probably need another good cry. Slip into your most comfy jammies, or in the buff (whatever suits you), have a glass of champagne, then cry yourself to sleep. Hopefully you’ll feel better in the morning.

Completely Irresponsible Way To Survive Getting Dumped On V-Day

  1. Go to a swank martini bar, neighborhood pub or grimy hole in the wall and get totally inebriated
  2. Stuff your face with chips & salsa, hot wings & blue cheese or chili cheese fries
  3. Makeout at the bar with whoever is willing to makeout with you
  4. Hookup with the bartender, have sex with a stranger in a public bathroom or host an orgy at your place
  5. Puke all over yourself or in the back seat of someone’s car
  6. Pass out in a drunken stupor at the end of the night

Remember that there is no absolute way to survive a Valentine’s Day breakup and it sucks to be in a position to have to. The goal is to just make it through to the dawn of a new day. February 14th only comes around once a year and if you can make it past the day you are on the horizon of a refreshing new possibility of love. Just get through it the best way you can.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!!
