As research has expanded the variety of available synthetic hormones, changes have occurred to the basic formulation of birth control pills. While many of these changes have made birth control pills safer, some have led to additional problems. Two birth control pills that have been linked to serious health issues and even sudden death are Yaz and Yasmin . Produced by the Bayer Company, Yaz and Yasmin contain a type of synthetic progestin called drosperinone. The pills have been helpful to many women suffering from severe premenstrual symptoms, such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). However, the drosperinone can also raise potassium levels in the blood stream, leading to serious complications. - Heart attack
- Pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs)

These serious side effects are even more likely to occur in those who are already taking medications that increase potassium levels such as: - NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen)
- ACE inhibitors for blood pressure control
- Heparin
Some pre-existing health conditions also increase the risk of serious side effects from Yaz and Yasmin. These include: - High blood pressure
