If you want to get somewhere in life, you have to know where you are going. You must know exactly what you want and have a plan to achieve it. That's where goals come into play. Setting goals is a crucial aspect if you want to achieve success in any area of your life. You will learn in this article my top 3 tips to set your goals in a very effective way.
First, take a few minutes to know exactly what you want. Your goal should be something that makes you feel good and you should be excited about achieving it. Once you know what your real goal is, then proceed through the steps:
1. Write down your goals and read them out loud
What you want here is to create a goal statement that you will write down on a piece of paper. Your statement has to be in the present tense and worded as if you've already achieved it. Your goal should be simple and realistic. Avoid shooting for the moon, especially if you are new to all this. If your goal is too big and you don't see how you could possibly achieve it, then it is probably not the right goal for you in this moment.
Now, after you have written it down, read it out loud. If you feel any negativity when reading it, there is probably a conscious or unconscious block showing up and you should clear it out. Repeat this writing and reading at least twice a day but don't overdo it. Ideally, you should do this after waking up and before going to bed.
For example, if you are someone who wants to improve your public speaking skills, your goal statement could be: "I am so happy and grateful now that I can speak naturally with radiating confidence in front of audiences". Really feel the positive emotions when you say your statement. That's very important.
2. Do something everyday about your goals
Here, you want to create new habits to reach your goals. Find something to do everyday to get you closer to your achievement. It doesn't have to be something very big or uncomfortable. Just take action in alignment with your goal and gradually expand your comfort zone. Be aware of the new opportunities that will show up in your life.
So again, if you want to improve your public speaking skills, what you could do at the very least is to visualize yourself speaking in front of large audiences. See yourself speaking with confidence and really feel the emotions. You can also work on clearing your mental blocks as explained in my first tip. Then as you get more comfortable, go ahead and speak in front of small audiences like your friends or family and then go out for bigger ones. This is only an example and the same steps can be applied to any other goals you might have.
3. Commit to your goals until you achieve them
Commitment is probably what keeps most people away from success. When people try something new and they don't see results after a few days, they give up. Everyone wants immediate tangible results but that's not always how it works here. You will meet obstacles on your journey. You will earn your success by keeping the focus on your goals and by the way that you overcome those obstacles. Not by quitting when the first one shows up or by blaming outer circumstances.
Now, regarding time frames and deadlines, some say that goals without a deadline are just dreams. But what if you have no idea when to set a realistic deadline? How will you feel if you haven't reached your goal at the set deadline? Chances are that you will feel bad about yourself, that this doesn't work or that you're doomed to failure. If you are able to deal positively with this situation, then go ahead and set your deadlines. It can be an effective way to set goals, especially in experienced hands. But if you are just getting started with this, I think you should avoid deadlines altogether.

Allow yourself to grow by getting over obstacles instead of letting them control you. After you have achieved your goals, create new and bigger ones.
