The Wedding Date and Season
One way to narrow down your selection is to consider the season of your wedding. If it's going to be held during winter months, you don't want to buy a sleeveless dress. If it's going to be in summer, you don't want to buy long sleeves. For a beach wedding, keep it simple. You won't need to wear a bunch of layers and ruffles at the beach! Also, think about the train length. A long one might be good for indoors, but not outdoors.

Body Type
There are five basic dress fits: A-line or Princess, Mermaid, Ball Gown, Empire, and Column or Sheath. A-line gowns are shaped like the letter "A"; Mermaid styles contours from the chest to knee, and then flows out to the hem; ball gowns have full skirts, empire styles have raised waist lines; and Column or Sheath dresses are straight from the shoulders to hem.
