An abundance of state of the art medical centers allow these folks to stay up to date on all their exams, from the routine hearing test to vision and dental check-ups, it's just a question of knowing when and where one should go to take care of these important matters. Because hearing loss typically develops over a period of time, there's no way of truly knowing whether or not you've fallen victim to this ailment. Rather, it is up to the individual to arrange routine check-ups in order to assure yourself that your facilities have not left you. As the shooter tends to always fire from one side, the opposite ear is typically the one affected due to what is called a ‘shadow effect'. The shadow effect is the result of the opposite ear blocking the sound of the shooter's head, thereby forcing extra strain on this ear and subsequently damaging it.
