Actonel

Actonel is drug that is used to treat normal as well as post menopausal osteoporosis. It can be used for men and women both. It can be prescribed to avoid the same as well. It is also known as risedronate. Actonel prescription medicatoncontains anhydrous risedronate sodium in the form of semi pentahydrates that change the bone formation and breakdown cycles in the body by increasing bone mass. You doctor may also advise some modifications in your dietary habits as required by this drug. Actonel is also used as medication for Paget's disease of bone in men and women.

Dosage

Actonel is to be taken before you take your first meal or drink of the day. It is to be ensured that the medication reaches the stomach and that is the reason why after taking the Actonel tablet the patient is asked to stay upright to facilitate the same. Actonel requires the patient to have good vitamin D and calcium. If the dietary intake is not delivering the required level of  vitamin D and calcium, the patient would need to take extra supplement to make up for the requirement. Actonel is available in 5mg, 35mg, 75 mg and 150 mg. Your doctor will decide you dosage on his diagnosis. Make sure you stick to the medication instructions as on the label or asked by your doctor. You might be asked to take 5mg tablet daily, 35mg tablet once a week, 75mg tablet twice a month or 150 mg tablet once a month.

Side Effects

The most commonly seen side effects of this drug are constipation, stomach ache, shooting pain in joints, especially in back, muscles, hips and knees. In severe cases it may also lead to osteonecrosis of the jaws. Osteonecrosis is characterized by symptoms like pain in jaw, swelling, numbness, loose teeth, gum related problems like bleeding, infection or delayed healing. It may also cause nausea, burning in chest, diarrhea, cramps, rigor mortis, convulsions, irritability and abnormal thoughts and behavior.

Precautions

You should not take this medicine without prescription of a certified medical practitioner. Make sure you let your doctor know about the ongoing medication if any as you that will help the doctor decide if Actonel can be prescribed or not. More over you should not use Actonel if you have esophagus problems like emptying the stomach or stomach ulcers. Also it is not advised to be taken if you have hypocalcemia, renal disorders or postural hypertension. If you face any difficulty or reaction symptoms, stop taking the medication and let your doctor know as soon as possible. As you would need to stay upright, do not take this medication if you can't do that or have difficulty in doing that. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant of planning to be pregnant during medication. As this drug is dangerous for lactating mothers, do not use this medication if you breast feed a baby. It is also advised not to take any vitamin, calcium or antacid for at least 30 minutes after taking this drug. Do no overdose this medication as it could mark poisonous effect. Drink a full glass of milk and try to avoid vomiting.
