If you are planning on visiting an acupuncturist, one of the first things you should find out is whether they have valid acupuncture malpractice insurance.

This might seem a strange route to take; it almost seems as if you're expecting something to go wrong. But it's merely a way to find out what protection you will be afforded if something should go wrong. As with any kind of medical practice, your own health and needs are paramount and the same is no exception when it comes to acupuncture.

What Should I Be Looking For?

Acupuncture malpractice insurance basically covers an acupuncturist to perform treatments on their patients. But it doesn't always cover every single treatment they may decide is needed, so check with them first to make sure the solution they are recommending for you is included.

All this might sound as though acupuncture malpractice insurance has been created to cover the acupuncturist against hundreds of court cases. This is not so, and you should not worry that any acupuncturist is going to cause more problems than they solve. It is merely wise to make sure they have coverage in case any problems do occur just as you would for anything else you have done, whether of a medical nature or not.

Knowing whether or not an acupuncturist has acupuncture malpractice insurance is one quick way to find out how reputable they are. If they have coverage they should be more than happy to tell you. If they try to evade any particular questions, such as whether or not they have ever been sued by a patient (regardless of the outcome), you might be better off searching for an alternative practice.

A Fairly New Approach

Acupuncture malpractice insurance is actually a reasonably new form of insurance that has become more popular as acupuncture itself has become more widespread and accepted.

An easy way to familiarise yourself with an individuals business before you even see them is to find out whether or not they have a website. Most reputable acupuncturists will have some kind of web presence, and they are usually only too pleased to state they have acupuncture malpractice insurance as a way of protecting both themselves and their patients.

In short, acupuncture is now recognised as an alternative form of treatment in many circles, and it is indeed vital that all providers should present a professional image. If you find that someone does not have full insurance coverage, the alarm bells should start to go off.
