ADDICTED TO SUGAR?

By Riley Taljaard

Have you ever noticed that once you start eating sugary foods it is difficult to stop? The sugar we eat causes our blood sugar to spike and then shortly thereafter to fall, which causes us to crave more sugary or starchy foods.

There have been studies done on mice, where mice were given food and sugar water. Over a period of time the sugar water was doubled. The mice were then taken off the sugar water. The result was much one would expect from someone going through drug withdrawal the mice experienced teeth-chattering, and shaking. The mice ,like drug addicts experienced relapses. Some mice; after recovering from what seemed to be sugar addiction, would attempt to get sugar water, by pressing a button that had previously released sugar water. This would start the whole process all over again. (Leah Ariniello,Brain Briefings, October 2003)

Another reason why sugary foods are addictive is that they cause serotonin to increase. If we are stressed or depressed it is natural to crave sugar rich foods because they will cause an increase in serotonin. As I just pointed out this will lead to a yo- yo effect.

The ideal is to eat a good quality carbohydrate in the form of unrefined grains , vegetables ,most fruit etc combined with a protein such as meat, fish, chicken, low fat milk, lentils, seeds, nuts etc. This will ensure that sugar doesn't rise and fall suddenly. Your blood sugar will stay under control which will in turn make it far easier to control your appetite and stay in control of your moods.

This doesn't however mean that you can never again enjoy a piece of chocolate cake. Now that you know the effect all of that sugar will have on you, you can plan accordingly. So have a small piece of cake after you have had a balanced meal.  If you are meeting a friend for cake and coffee then share the piece of cake and have a handful of nuts each.

Remember everything in moderation.
