Addiction treatment is borne from the need to wean an individual off of his or her dependency. They may be addicted to chemical substances like drugs or alcohol, or it can be a compulsion that drives them to certain conditions, such as gambling or eating disorders. As these addictions begin to interfere in their day-to-day life, so too does the patient need to do away with these detrimental activities. Addiction is deadly; the effects of addiction run the gamut from health complications, social rejection, and employment termination and at times, even death. Treatments for addiction are designed to replace the behavior and the addictions with a new lifestyle. It is not easy – many people fail at their early attempts at rehabilitation because of factors that can all play a role in the growth of the client, both personally and professionally. For example, a patient addicted to the drugs who may have developed an aversion to sleep can undergo treatment to correct sleeping habits. The goal is to let the patient live a full, healthy life. However, not all who suffer from an addiction engage in addiction treatment or rehabilitation procedures. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health for 2008 indicated that of the 23.1 million people aged 12 or older who needed specialized treatment, only 2.3 million or 0.9% received treatment, leaving over 20 million people out and unable to receive addiction treatment. The factors for these are numerous, including fear of social stigma, as well as the costs for rehabilitation at specialized facilities. Resource Box: Behind the 12 Visions International is a team of addiction treatment specialists who take an innovative method for helping people deal with addiction. They provide a unique program that can be done at one's own home, thus saving them the exorbitant costs and the possible loss of work associated with long-term live-in programs. If you or someone you love shows signs of a need for therapy, learn about what can be done by visiting or by calling 877-999-1284.
