Are you alarmed by a sudden ringing sound in your ears? Does your tinnitus strike on unpredictable times within a day? Are you frustrating by not being able to find a cure for tinnitus? Most sudden ear ringing experiences can be stressful and the search for a cure can be frustrating. But there are tinnitus retraining therapies that can help you handle the onset of tinnitus.

Tinnitus retraining therapy or TRT is designed as a habituation therapy. It recognizes the effects and causes of sudden ear ringing , and helps by counseling on how to retrain their reaction to tinnitus. The therapy takes time but since the approach is psychological and personal, most people find TRT effective, and easy to follow. Also, the absence of drugs or medication proves to be an advantage, and eradicates unwanted side effects.

Most TRT's are a combination of counseling and sound enrichment exercises that are focused on changing the reaction of tinnitus sufferers to sudden ear ringing. It aims to stop panic reactions, which can cause anxiety and worsen the situation. The therapy is designed to help a person reduce its awareness on sudden ear ringing, and eventually remove the perception that it is there. By that, ex-tinnitus sufferers are able to accept the sound and eventually forget about it, therefore help people continue to focus on their work and live a normal life.

With Pawel J. Jastreboff, Tinnitus Retraining Therapy in Emory University Atlanta Georgia, patients are taught to learn to live with tinnitus. Their neurophysiological model of tinnitus, mechanisms and generation of the desired perception boasts significant improvement to its participants by 80%. Through their therapy, they conclude that they can restore completely or partially the normal perception or sensitivity to sound. The whole retraining therapy can last 12 months up to 18 months.

Some retraining therapy program also includes noise generators that provide background to mimic situations where sudden ear ringing occurs. With that, patients are guided on how to handle sudden ear ringing while it is on its onset. Like simulation methods on phobia-therapies, the noise generators allow patients to experience a simulation of real life sudden ear ringing, and how to handle it. Patients learn how to respond to the sudden ear ringing, and practice a non-destructive perception towards tinnitus. The therapy is effective to most people since each individual is able to reprogram their response in their own way, as long as they reach the aim: not letting tinnitus affect their normal lives.
