Since the point of cosmetic surgery is to improve your appearance, scar prevention is always high on the list of desired advancements in the field. Over the years cosmetic surgeons have developed surgical techniques to minimize the appearance of scars, by using more precise instruments, smaller incisions, and making incisions in hard to see place. The product is called Juvista, and the key ingredient is a synthetic form of a protein called transforming growth factor B3 (TGFB3).
So, what about the alligators?
The scar preventing properties of TGFB3 were discovered by Mark Ferguson, the developer of Juvista, while he was studying cleft palates in alligators. He performed surgery on alligator embryos, which have high levels of TGFB3, and the alligators were born scar free.
Eventually he developed the drug which helps to prevent and reduce scarring in people, and he tested it on himself first.
Beyond cosmetics
The benefits of scar prevention and scar reduction in cosmetic surgery are obvious, but the applications of Juvista may go much further.
Severe scarring can be painful and debilitating. In extreme cases it can eventually lead to death. Burn and accident victims often develop significant scar tissue, sometimes over a large portion of their bodies. This scar tissue is not only disfiguring, it can restrict movement of limbs or even organs.
It may be possible that emergency rooms and hospitals could use a form of the drug to prevent severe scarring, maximizing healing, increasing survival rates, and vastly improving quality of life.
Scar revision today
If you have scars that you want to reduce, you don’t have to wait for Juvista. There are a number of effective scar revision techniques in use today, including:

· Dermabrasion
· Steroid injections
· Silicone or mineral oil sheets
· Cryotherapy
· Skin grafts

The type of scar revision which will work best depends on the type, size, and location of scaring.
