When most of us think engagement ring we automatically think diamond ring, but there are other options and a few reasons why you would want to choose something other than a diamond. Just because most engagement rings contain a diamond it doesn't mean they all need to, for some things like budget, taste and wanting something non-traditional create a good reason to look for an alternative.

In some cases the guy is ready to pop the question but knows he doesn't have enough money right now to buy the ring he would like. Some consider using an imitation diamond like cubic zirconium or the new imitation that can fool most people, synthetic moissanite. This may be alright if she knows it is a synthetic and maybe you have plans to buy something nicer in a couple of years when you know you will be able to afford what you want. Just don't try to pass it off as the real thing. You don't want to try to fool someone with a gift this important and symbolic.

Instead you may want to get an engagement ring with a precious gem like a ruby or sapphire as the centerpiece instead of a diamond. There have been many famous proposals made with these types of rings, like Princess Diana who received a sapphire ring. This is also a good option for a woman who doesn't want a diamond ring. Other stones that work well and are more affordable include things like a red garnet, green garnet or a blue tourmaline

Another similar option is to get a ring with a birthstone as the centerpiece. The birthstone could be hers or his, as long as it has special meaning for the couple and this special occasion. You may even want to accent it with small diamonds to combine the symbolism with that of the birthstone.

If she doesn't really want a gem stone of any sort consider a pearl. Pearls have long been associated with love and weddings. A pearl in an antique setting is worth considering. The important thing to remember is the special meaning of the occasion. The ring is meant to be a symbol of something beautiful and lasting like the love you share.
