"Do you know that exposure to extreme noise is the most common source of hearing loss? Do you know that almost 65% of those with hearing disabilities are under the age of 65? Do you know that over the past 30 years, the occurrence of hearing loss has increased? And do you know that June is known as the hearing aid awareness month? "
We have to know basic facts about what is going on and what is happening around us with regards to hearing disability. That is because hearing loss is considered as the nation's most untreated problem and one of the most widespread conditions like high blood pressure and arthritis. The person involved will not notice the occurrence of this condition right away because the development is gradual. It is necessary to follow essential hearing health care practices to avoid buildup of any hearing impairment.
The National Council on the Aging (NCOA) conducted research and found out that "amplification" like the hearing aids technology, is very effective in correcting some common hearing problems. These documented studies have shown that when hearing was improved with the use of modern technology, a patient's quality of life becomes more significant and meaningful. It includes changes like enhanced personal relationships, healthier emotional stability, more feeling of control, higher self-esteem, better feeling of security and independence and most importantly, an improved health and sense of well-being.
Higher buildup of self-esteem and self-worth was reported by more than half of all the users of hearing aids and about 40% of them have said that in general, their lives had improved. No matter what a person's lifestyle is, better hearing could definitely enrich life's most precious experiences.
Untreated hearing problems could affect the patient's quality of life because it increases negative psychosocial conditions. These conditions include stress, anxiety, depression and a feeling of isolation. A survey was conducted by NCOA and revealed that people who are experiencing discomfort and loss of hearing, and doesn't use hearing aids would most likely feel the following:
• Paranoia • Emotional confusion • Insecurity • Depression • Stress • Low social activity
If a person is still not experiencing any damage in his auditory system, it is best to consult a doctor for hearing health care practices. As we all know, prevention is still better than cure. Good hearing is essential in communicating to our loved ones and friends.
