Spiritual Coach, Terri Amos-Britt describes it as a state of feeling pressured to live up to other people's standards and not allowing ourselves to be who we really are. According to Terri Amos-Britt, what happens when we're in this state is we feel disconnected from our inner selves. It's like the adult part of us has abandoned our child self.

She suggests that you talk to the little girl inside you by asking her: "Why are you feeling this way?" She had been experiencing emotional chaos and in dialoguing with her inner child she got this response: "I have to be perfect when I go out in public." It allowed her to relax and tell herself "I give myself permission to be who I am."

She suggests if you're dealing with this state that you immediately connect to the little girl by asking who are you, what do you want, how can I help you. She advises: "Take care of that little girl , have a relationship with her."

I completely agree with her. I go a step further to suggest that little girl inside is your powerhouse, your creative centre, the vehicle that moves you forward. If you find yourself wanting to move but you're feeling stuck it's that fearful inner child who's keeping you there…

Rather than beat up on her to move, speak to her lovingly, kindly, gently. Say something like: "Little girl, I need your help. I'm going to do this presentation (or whatever it is you need to do) and I know you're scared. It's okay. You're safe, we're safe. We can do this. Please help me."

This little child is similar to a four year old who might decide to throw a tantrum at the oddest time while you're out in public or even refuse to move when you need to keep going. Your best results with this four year old will come from treating her with love and kindness and not brute force. If we treat her with brute force we may get short term results but over the long term we're going to be frustrated and railroaded constantly because she is unhappy and she's going to act out to express her unhappiness.  Similarly inside each of us is a little girl who has never grown up and never will. If we can accept that and treat her with kindness and love we'll definitely experience more peace and joy in our lives.
