This medicine is an antihistamine used to treat anxiety, to relieve itching caused by allergic conditions, and to cause drowsiness. Antihistamines work by decreasing the effects of histamine, a chemical the body releases that narrows air passages in the lungs and contributes to inflammation. Antihistamines reduce itching and swelling and dry up secretions from the nose, eyes, and throat. Mast cell tumors are tumors involving cells which contain granules of histamine. Patients with mast cell tumors experience chronic inflammatory symptoms due to circulating histamine. Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine may be helpful given long term though hydroxyzine could also be used.

Side Effects of Atarax

This medicine will add to the effects of other depressants and alcohol. Side effects that may go away during treatment include drowsiness or dry mouth. Dizziness, weakness, headache and confusion have been reported by some patients. Muscle spasms, including rare instances of tremor and convulsions, have occurred, usually when very high doses of Atarax have been taken.

Warnings and precautions before taking Atarax:

Atarax can cause drowsiness. Driving or operating dangerous machinery or participating in any hazardous activity that requires full mental alertness is not recommended until you know how you react to Atarax.

Drug Interaction :-

Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine.

*It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Atarax with the following:
*Barbiturates such as Seconal and Phenobarbital
*Narcotics such as Demerol and Percocet
*Non-narcotic analgesics such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Overdose

The most common manifestation of Atarax overdosage is hypersedation. Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected. If vomiting has not occurred spontaneously, it should be induced. Immediate gastric lavage is also recommended. General supportive care, including frequent monitoring of the vital signs and close observation of the patient, is indicated.
