Ativan is used to treat anxiety, nervousness, and tension that are associated with anxiety disorders. Ativan (Lorazepam) may also be used to help in the prevention of severe alcohol withdraw symptoms (Delirium Tremens, or DTs), to treat amnesia, or in patients who are undergoing chemotherapy and have severe vomiting. It may be given to children to treat serial seizures by placing it under the tongue. It is also used to treat certain types of seizure disorders and to relieve insomnia.

Side Effects of Ativan

If you experience any side effects, it will usually be at the beginning of your treatment; they will probably disappear as you continue to take the drug, or if your dosage is reduced. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Reactions to Ativan have included increased aggressiveness, exhibited by violent behavior in some instances, depression with or without suicidal thoughts or intentions, personality changes, hallucinations, depersonalization, derealization, as well as other psychotic symptoms.

Warnings and precautions before taking Ativan:

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Ativan will cause drowsiness and may cause dizziness. If you experience drowsiness or dizziness, avoid these activities. If you have decreased kidney or liver function, then you should be used this medicine with extra caution and should be discussed with your doctor. After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Ativan with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Ativan with other drugs. Ativan may intensify the effects of alcohol. Avoid alcohol while taking Ativan.

Overdose

After taken Ativan if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of an Ativan overdose include sleepiness, dizziness, confusion, a slow heart beat, difficulty breathing, difficulty walking and talking, an appearance of being drunk, and unconsciousness.
