Stress is everywhere. We live with it at work, at school, and at home. At work, our employer's demands as well as our coworkers can make our stress levels increase to a very unhealthy level. At home, the many chores that need to be done and bills to be paid can also increase our stress levels. At school, the myriad demands of homework, teams, sports, and friends, can also make it go way too high. It affects so many aspects of our life in a negative way if we do not control it.
Panic attacks are one result for some people. Everybody experiences a rise in blood pressure as a result. If this stays elevated, it can lead to hypertension which will require medication to keep it under control. Our physical growth can be impacted as well.
So, how do you lower it?
There are many things you can do. Some take time and others you can do anywhere.
Take a deep breath. If you feel yourself getting stressed, stop for a second and just take a few deep breaths in through your nose and let it out slowly your mouth. This will help to relieve tension and release tight muscles in the neck area.
Stretch your neck. If you have been sitting for a few hours starting at a computer, you will want to stretch so that your blood starts to flow to areas that may be getting tight. Roll your head slowly all around you and feel the muscles tightening and loosening in your neck and shoulder area. Include some deep breathing as well.
Go for a walk. It is amazing what this simple activity can do for you. If you have access to a green park nearby, going for a walk either leisurely or briskly will do wonders to restore you.
Start a hobby. When life's pressures become too much, it helps to have a hobby to do. It will help to take your mind off of matters and will help you get back to your old self.
Stroke your pet. If you have a cat, dog, rabbit, or other four legged furry creatures, petting them will help to ease your anxiety too.
Watch a fish tank. Aquariums are known to help reduce stress, especially if they have live aquatic plants and peaceful fishes swimming in and out of the underwater jungle.
What do you enjoy doing? If you like watching movies, watch a move to help you calm down. Ultimately, you want to find what makes you feel better and do that when you feel life is getting tough.
